Cultivation Contractors: Ploughing, Power Harrowing & Deep Ripping
Good crops and pasture grow from well-prepared ground. JFM Contracting offers ploughing, power harrowing and deep ripping across coastal Taranaki, getting paddocks ready for maize, new grass and other crops.
Ploughing
Ploughing turns over old pasture and buries surface weeds and trash, giving you a clean start before cropping or regrassing. It's often the first step when a paddock is going into maize or being fully renewed.
Power harrowing
Power harrowing breaks the soil down into a fine, level seedbed. A firm, even seedbed helps seed go in at a consistent depth, which gives more even establishment when the paddock is drilled with maize or grass.
Deep ripping
Years of stock, machinery and wet winters can create a compacted layer below the surface. Deep ripping breaks up that compacted layer, which can help water drain and let roots grow deeper. It's worth considering where paddocks pond, drain poorly or grow crops that struggle to root.
Signs a paddock may need cultivation
- Surface water sitting after rain
- Pugged or uneven ground after winter
- Poor or patchy pasture growth
- Weedy, run-down pasture due for renewal
- Paddock going into maize or another crop
- Shallow roots or crops that struggle
Cultivation and drilling together
Because we also drill, we can take a paddock from old pasture to sown crop. That means less waiting between jobs, and the seedbed is drilled while it's in its best condition.
Common questions
Do I need to plough, or is power harrowing enough?
It depends on what's in the paddock now and what you're sowing. We'll talk through the options and recommend what suits the ground.
When is the best time for deep ripping?
Deep ripping works best when the soil is dry enough to shatter rather than smear, so timing depends on conditions. Talk to us and we'll plan it for when the ground is right.
